Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom by Derecka Purnell is a memoir and political analysis that traces the author's journey from skepticism to becoming a police abolitionist, arguing that police reform is insufficient and that true justice requires dismantling policing and creating new systems to address harm. The book blends personal narrative, history, and theory, drawing on Purnell's experiences as a lawyer and organizer in St. Louis and Ferguson, and connects contemporary movements to historical struggles against white supremacy, ultimately advocating for a future without state violence.
